English 1 – 2 1 Credit Grade: 9th Prerequisites: Meets eligibility criteria
This course is required for graduation. It is the first step in an integrated sequence of instruction in the language arts essential skills. Thematic units introduce students to the foundational process skills and knowledge of necessary to meet state graduation competencies in language arts. A variety of short selections, both expressive-descriptive and informative-expository, will be analyzed. The research process and the form an essay will be introduced.
English 3 – 4 1 Credit Grade: 10th Prerequisites: English 1-2
This course is required for graduation. It is the second step in an integrated sequence of instruction in the language arts essential skills. Thematic units continue instruction in the process skills and knowledge necessary to meet state and graduation competencies in language arts. A variety of selections, both expressive-descriptive and informative-expository will be analyzed. Writing assignments will emphasize using the writing process to develop and support a thesis.
English 5 – 6 1 Credit Grade: 11th Prerequisites: English 3-4
This course is required for graduation. It is the third step in an integrated sequence of instruction in the language arts essential skills. Thematic units provide an overview of the American literary tradition, and continue instruction in the process skills and knowledge necessary to meet state graduation competencies in language arts. Literacy analysis and course-effect essay will be stressed.
English 7 – 8 1 Credit Grade: 12th Prerequisites: English 5-6
This course is required for graduation. It is the capstone experience in an integrated sequence of instruction in the language arts essential skills. Thematic units provide an overview of the British literary tradition and continue instruction in the process sills and knowledge necessary to meet state graduation competencies in the language arts. Students will complete a comprehensive, integrated project as a culminating assessment of their competencies in the language arts essential skills.
Language Arts Electives
English Skills 1A–2B 2 Credit Grade: All Grades Prerequisite: SRI Test Score
These courses will focus on improving a student’s fundamental reading skills. Reading 1 will be tailored to students who are reading at the K – 4th grade reading level. Reading 2 will be tailored to students who are reading at the 5th – 8th grade reading level.
AIMS English ½ Credit Grade: 10th, 11th & 12th Prerequisites: Eng 1-2
English Review is a highly structured time-expanded course. Thematic units introduce students to the foundational process skills and knowledge necessary to meet school and state graduation requirements in Language Arts. Emphasis is on understanding the structures and processes fundamental to reading and writing.
Mathematics
Algebra 1 – 2 1 Credit Grade: 9th
Prerequisites: Appropriate eligibility requirements
Algebra 1 focuses on fractions, integers, variable, solving, and graphing linear equations, solving systems of equations, and related word problems.
Algebra 2 covers distributive properties, factoring, solving, and graphing quadratic equations, introduction to probabilities, radicals and exponentials, right triangle trigonometry, and related word problems.
Geometry 1 – 2 1 Credit Grade: 10th
Prerequisites: Competency in Algebra 1 - 2
Geometry 1 focuses on the strategies of inductive and deductive reasoning to find the measures of angles and segments in polygons and circles. These strategies are extended to solids to find areas and volume. Coordinate geometry and constructions are thematic throughout the course. Other topics covered are parallel lines and geometric probability. Geometry 2 focuses on many of the same concepts that are included in the Geometry 1 course; however, students will be required to demonstrate a higher level of performance on established outcomes. This course covers fundamental math concepts and is designed to give students an opportunity to increase their math skills before entering a Pre-Algebra course. The course will cover whole number, decimal and fraction operations, basic geometric properties and some basic pre-algebraic concepts. This course does not meet math requirement for graduation.
Pre-Algebra ½ Credit Grade: All Grades Prerequisite: Star Math Score
This course covers pre-algebraic concepts and is designed to give students an opportunity to increase their math skills before entering an Algebra course.
AIMS Math ½ Credit Grade: 10th, 11th, & 12th
Prerequisites: Algebra 1-2
Math review is designed to reinforce math concepts taught in Algebra 1-2 and Geometry 1-2. Math review will be available to those students who have completed the core academic math courses and who have not passed the AIMS math section. This course does not meet math requirements for graduation.
Social Studies
World History & Geography 1 – 2 1 Credit Grade: 10th
Prerequisites: None
This course will emphasize the study of geography and history of the world and how they are interrelated. Students will analyze political, economical, geographical, historical, and cultural aspects to draw conclusions about how world regional issues influence the present.
U.S./AZ History 1 – 2 1 Credit Grade: 11th
Prerequisites: World History/Geography 1-2
AZ/U.S. History surveys the development of America from the Age of Exploration to the present time. Emphasis is on socio-political-economic and geographic changes throughout history.
American Government½ Credit Grade: 12th
Prerequisites: US/AZ History 1-2
American Government examines the U.S. Constitution, the three branches of government, and current events.
Social Studies Electives
Student Government 2 Credit Grade: All Grades
Prerequisites: Teacher recommendation
Students will assume leadership roles to accomplish objectives; apply principles of resource management; employ organizational techniques, strategies, practices, and structure; use principles of effective oral, written and listening communication skills; and justify performance by monitoring and evaluative outcomes. This course is divided into four sections.
Science
Intergrated Science 1 – 2 1 Credit Grade: 9th
Prerequisites: None
This course is a process approach to teaching the concepts of science and is organized around the themes of scientific thinking, matter, energy, motion, and the environment. The scientific process skills taught in this course provide the prerequisites for success in future science study. This course meets the science lab requirement for state universities.
Biology 1 – 2 1 Credit Grade: 10th Prerequisites: Earth Science 1-2
Biology is a lab class that includes the study of life processes. The course also includes a study of the five kingdoms and their roles in the environment. This course meets the lab requirement for state universities.
Health ½ Credit Grade: 9th Prerequisites: None
This class is designed to introduce the student to the many aspects of health education, mental health, nutrition, exercise/fitness, drugs, disease, and first aid. Students will learn how to assess their own health and fitness levels and to evaluate their needs.
Science Electives

This class will introduce students to fundamental science concepts involving the scientific method, units of measurement, and basic science terms that will prepare students for core science courses.
Fine Art & Vocational

Students learn the basic techniques of visual arts using a wide variety of art materials with the basic elements and principles of design
Advance Art ½ Credit Grade: All Grades Prerequisites: Art
Students learn more advance techniques of visual arts using a wide variety of art materials with the basic elements and principles of design.
School Assistant ½ Credit Grade: All Grades Prerequisite: None
This course will fulfill elective credit requirements and offers an introduction to skills needed in today’s office. Included areas of study are: the office environment, career opportunities, attitude, human relations, and work ethics.
School/Community Service ½ Credit Grade: All Grades Prerequisites: None
Students volunteer their services at selected non-profit community sites and receive elective credit. Course requirements include: 60 hours for ½ credit per block; limit of 2 credits possible per student; descriptive journal entries must be kept and relate to volunteer’s perspective of personal benefits from on-going site experiences; and a final typed report submitted to the Asst. Principal (content will consist of analysis of research as related to the volunteer’s actual experience).
Work Experience ½ Credit Grade: All Grades Prerequisites: None
Student must be enrolled as a full time student (3 classes), be 16 years of age, receive a C or better in all classes. The student must be able to verify 130 hours (during the block) of paid employment.
Yearbook ½ Credit Grade: All Grades Prerequisites: None
Yearbook is a student production that covers the activities and people that school year. This experience allows students to use their skill in photography, layout, writing, word processing, marketing, and graphic design to produce a yearbook.
Gym ½ Credit Grade: All Grades Prerequisites: None
This course is designed to improve total body fitness. Students will develop endurance, balance, agility and improve their overall physical health. All students that take this course will be required to follow the training program designed by the instructor.
Fitness ½ Credit Grade: All Grades Prerequisites: None
This course is designed to improve total body fitness. Students will develop endurance, balance, muscle tone and improve their overall physical health. Students will be educated on healthy eating habits and proper nutrition. All students that take this course will be required to follow the training program designed by the instructor.

Intro ELL 1 Credit Grade: All Grades

This course is designed for students who have no proficiency in English.
Beginning ELL 1 Credit Grade: All Grades
Prerequisites: SELP Score or teacher recommendation
This course is designed for non-English proficient students. Students develop listening, speaking, reading and writing in English in the broad contexts of survival, intercultural and academic skills. The course prepares students for participation in content area classes.
Intermediate ELL 1 Credit Grade: All Grades
Prerequisites: SELP Score or teacher recommendation
This course is designed for limited-English proficient students. Students develop listening, speaking, reading and writing in English with emphasis on reading and writing.
Advance ELL 1 Credit Grade: All Grades
Prerequisites: SELP Score or teacher recommendation
This course is designed for limited-English proficient students. Students refine listening, speaking, reading and writing skills with emphasis on academic reading and writing.
Transitional ELL 1 Credit Grade: All Grades
Prerequisites: SELP Score or teacher recommendation
This course is designed to enable students who have achieved a high level of English proficiency to acquire the academic reading and writing skills necessary for success in the regular English program.
Academic Decathlon 1/2 Credit Grade: All Grades
This course is designed to prepare students for an annual high school academic competition organized by the non-profit United States Academic Decathlon Association. The competition consists of seven multiple choice tests, two performance events, and an essay.
